MALE PATTERN BALDNESS

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Androgenetic alopecia, more commonly referred to as male pattern baldness, is a type of hair loss that causes balding in men at specific areas of the scalp, namely the temples and crown. Male Pattern Baldness is a common diagnosis, in fact, by age 35, 66% of American men will suffer from some form of hair loss. Hair loss may be common, but the patients that suffer can find it to be an embarrassing experience. Male Pattern Baldness can be caused by heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions and even medications themselves. In some instances, male pattern baldness can be caused by hairstyles such as cornrows or perms. Male pattern baldness typically causes men to lose their hair in two primary patterns, receding at the hairline/temples and/or balding at the crown. This condition is caused by an excess of testosterone.

How is it usually treated?

Typically, with Male Pattern baldness, there are some options to traditional treatment. There are a variety of medications, products and procedures available for Male Pattern Baldness, but none that restore the damaged hair follicles. Hair loss products like Rogaine or Propecia are designed to prevent further hair loss. Sometimes, medications applied to the scalp are prescribed, and in other cases hairpieces or wigs may be worn. In severe cases, hair restoration surgery may be performed. Hair Restoration surgery is where hair follicles are removed from other healthy areas of the scalp and transplanted into the thinning areas. Yet, hair restoration surgery does not stop the underlying hair loss, and patients still experience hair loss in the future in other areas of the scalp.

What are the advantages to PRP Therapy for men’s hair loss?

PRP therapy offers a number of advantages for hair restoration. PRP therapy is a safe alternative to surgery with permanent effects. With PRP therapy, patients who want to avoid surgical hair replacement can regrow their own hair naturally by healing and repairing damaged follicles without surgery or medication. With PRP therapy, there is a low risk of rejection or infection because the PRP is taken from the patient’s own blood. The procedure itself has zero downtime, letting patients return to their normal daily routine directly after the procedure. Patients who undergo PRP Therapy for hair loss can also enjoy natural-looking hair as it simply regrows in its normal growth pattern.
